Root rot

The most common cause of houseplant death.

Updated on 2026-07-17

Overview

Root rot follows prolonged waterlogging. Roots, starved of oxygen, become vulnerable to pathogens like Pythium and Phytophthora, which cause decay.

Differential diagnosis

Healthy roots: white/cream, firm. Rotten roots: dark, soft, foul-smelling. If the stem base feels mushy: advanced rot.

Natural remedies

Pull the root ball, cut all rotten roots, dust the rest with cinnamon powder (natural antifungal), repot in dry mix.

Treatments

In severe cases, systemic fungicide with fosetyl-aluminum. Withhold water for 7–10 days.

Prevention

Pots with drainage, well-draining mix, never standing water in the saucer.
