Monstera Deliciosa is the icon of modern houseplants. With the right care, it is not difficult at all: this guide takes you from purchase to the first years of life, with all the tricks growers keep to themselves.
Pick the right Monstera
At the nursery pick specimens with at least one already-fenestrated leaf: it means the plant is ready to produce new perforated leaves. Check leaf undersides for spider mites and the roots at the pot hole: they must be pale.
The perfect spot
Bright filtered light: 2–3 meters from a south window, or next to an east/north window. Direct sun scorches leaves in hours. Rotate the plant 90° every week for symmetrical growth.
The moss pole
Monstera is a climber: without support, leaves stay small. A moist moss pole stimulates the plant to produce aerial roots that anchor and grow much bigger, more fenestrated leaves.
Watering
Water when the top 3–4 cm of soil are dry. In heated homes this typically means once a week in summer and every 10–14 days in winter.
Common problems
Diffuse yellow leaves = overwatering. No leaf holes = low light or plant too young. Brown tips = low humidity. Fine webs = spider mites.
Frequently asked questions
Is Monstera toxic?
Yes to pets (calcium oxalate). Not fatal but irritating — keep away from curious cats and dogs.
How often should I repot?
Every 2 years in spring, one pot size (4–5 cm) larger.
