Overview

Lavender is an aromatic perennial shrub famous for fragrant purple spikes that attract bees and butterflies.

Full sun and poor, well-drained soil. Ideal in borders and terracotta pots.

Very sparing: only when soil is fully dry. Hates waterlogging.

At least 6 hours of direct sun daily.

Calcareous, sandy, free-draining. pH 6.5–8.

Not required; a handful of compost in early spring is enough.

Prune by a third after flowering to keep the cushion shape.

Every 2–3 years if potted, in autumn.
